Life is Precious: Let’s Do Our Part!

Make Your Days Count

God has shown me just how precious our life is this past summer. I have seen how important it is to use each minute of our time wisely. This life that our Creator has given us can be taken away in an instant.

Last July, I spent my Saturday at a 5K benefit for my sister-in-law who is battling Cholangiocarcinoma also known as Bile Duct Cancer of the liver. She is a wife and mother of an 8 year old boy. We celebrated her life, and built her spirits up for the surgery she was going to have. She received so much love and support reminding her how important she was to all of us.

The First Attempt

In December, she was diagnosed. By January, she was in surgery to remove the cancer. They opened her up, only to find that it was too big and they were unable to remove it. We were disheartened, but hopeful. She had gone through months of chemotherapy, and was told by imaging that the tumor had gotten smaller by about 50%. The doctors sounded confident, and we were hopeful that this time would be different.

Not Always Our Plan

This second attempt at surgery didn’t go the way we had hoped it would. It turns out that the imaging was inaccurate and the tumor had actually grown. They were once again unable to remove this, and she was told that the chemo kept her healthy, but didn’t actually help the cancer. This was not the news anyone expected to hear. We had put so much faith in that imaging, and I wonder if times like this, God is saying,”Put your faith in me.” This is exactly what we have to do now. We are believing for a miracle that she will be healed, as we know our God can do anything. She is looking at other options for treatment now, and remains ready to fight. We are also looking at life so differently these days. This life we tend to take for granted has suddenly become that much more precious. We are reminded that these minutes on Earth are few, and we must make the most of our time here.

A Lesson for Us

Our health is such a gift. It is something we need to take seriously. I am reminded that not everything that happens to our bodies is in our control, but it does make me want to take advantage of the parts of my health I can control. We can do our part to take care of these miraculous machines that have been so delicately designed by our Creator.

Our part includes getting active, putting good foods into our body, and being aware of the portions we are consuming. These eliminate so much extra stress put on other parts of our body. Many of us have a way to avoid certain health ailments like diabetes, heart problems, and high blood pressure. We have the chance to turn things around, let’s take advantage of that chance before it’s too late.

If you are able to read this, then it is not too late to start taking care of your health.
