5 Workout Ideas for the Busy Mom

Being a busy mom,

it is so hard to find the time and opportunity to get a good workout in. We have children that demand our attention, and going out for a nice run or a trip to the gym isn’t always possible. This doesn’t mean you have give up your workout time. It does mean you may have to get a little creative.

Here are my top 5 favorite activities to get a nice workout in conveniently!

1. Video Games

There are so many workouts that you can do with your video game systems. This was a staple for me in the beginning of my journey when my Tessa was an infant. I would squeeze in a Biggest Loser workout or a dance game on my Wii Fit!  I could pause the game if I had to and do it in my own home while the baby was sleeping just a few feet away from me. This isn’t so ideal with toddlers, but perfect for the sleeping baby!

2. Yard WorkShovel Time

I love mowing lawn and every time I do it I burn hundreds of calories! I can do this with little ones playing in my backyard! I also love pulling weeds, and anything that involves muscle and being outside. Clean out the brush behind the shed, do some landscaping! These are things that can be done in your yard, while supervising your children. At one point, I was volunteering to mow my parents’ lawn while they spent time with my girls.

3. Workout Videos

These are not exactly my favorite, but it makes workouts possible when it normally wouldn’t be. I can’t get to the gym in the morning because of my children, but I can wake up early and get one in before they are awake. I can also attempt to do videos with them around. It’s not easy when my toddlers are climbing on my back while I am trying to do planks, but something is better than nothing. My girls love to try the moves with me while I workout. When my oldest was a baby, I actually did walking videos while wearing the Moby wrap. I climbed up and down my stairs while wearing her. It’s just about moving while you can.

One of the Video Series my Trainer turned me onto is a free series online from the workout section of Livestrong.com and I use these workouts a couple times a week right now.

4. Clean Your House

Cleaning your house isn’t much fun for most people. I like to make it a competition for myself. I try to get as many steps and burn as many calories as I can while tackling dishes and laundry. I have found myself being less resentful of the housework while making goals for my movement. Looking at house work from another angle changes your mind and it makes it much more enjoyable!

My girls are always begging for a dance party with mom! We blast the music and dance! I set a timer, usually thirty minutes and we dance like no one is watching! It is so fun for me and the kids. It’s nice to break a sweat when you are just having fun! It is something that you don’t need a babysitter for and something that can be done any time of the day.

I hope these ideas help you next time you feel like you are too busy to workout. I hope it has opened your eyes to some new ideas that may help you take care of yourself so that you can be the best mom possible! Bottom line is that if you are moving steadily, it will pay off!
