Self Love, Freedom and Forgiveness
I have never been a really big fan of Valentine’s Day if I’m honest. I have this incredible ability to set very high expectations of how the day might go & the kicker is I tell no one! So my husband has an impossible task. Poor guy is set up to fail every time.
Am I Loveable?
Over the last year or so I have had multiple reasons to believe I’m not a lovable person or even worth the love from others. It’s hard to love myself when others around me are not showing me love. You begin to pick yourself apart and rationalize why people hurt you.
The good news is I serve a great God who has shown me that he loves me and that I’m worth loving. He created me in his image (Gen.1:26) & in Psalms 139:14 we are told we are “fearfully and wonderfully made”, we are His creation!
God commands us to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Romans 13:9-10). How can we give what we don’t have?! We have to love ourselves so we can have love to give to others and then we can be obedient to our Heavenly Father.
Love is an action, it’s a choice. God showed us that by sacrificing his one and only son to show us the love he has for us.
How do I love myself?
So how do we love ourselves? I asked some friends of mine using the random Facebook Poll status update method! Some people wanted to be with friends or family for time away from “real life” enjoying drinks, food and laughter. Others wanted to be one with nature and enjoy some dirt in their hands creating beautiful gardens. Buying a present for yourself was also a common response. There was a handful that just wanted coffee/tea time outs. We all have different love languages that we speak so we will show love to ourselves differently.
Loving ourselves is a process we have to go through just like when we love another.
We need to be thankful! Be thankful for the physical body that God made you specifically! Be thankful for the experiences you have had in your life that God has used to grow you and build strength.
Our body is a temple and needs to be taken care of to honor the Father. (1Cor. 3:16)
The human body is an incredible tool. Don’t doubt what it is capable of and don’t destroy it from the inside out with what you feed yourself. Show love to yourself by consuming things that benefit Christ’s temple. Be at your best with what you have available to you and God will honor that.
Our Past, Forgiveness and Self Love
I have heard so many people want more money or more time but God gives us those things already. Are we handling it with his plan in mind? How much of that are we using to glorify Him? Our bodies are the same, we have this one shot with it so why not take care of ourselves with everything we have.
We have to forgive ourselves from past mistakes and trust God in his word. He says he takes our sins and they are removed. When we dwell on our past we are not truly moving forward with the journey God has for us. He gives us so much grace that we need to accept that, learn from our mess ups but move forward using them to minister to others! Allow forgiveness to yourself then be transparent and real so people can really see God at work in a way that others have never seen because He is now in control. He knows more then we can even imagine! Turn it all over to Him!
When I’m focusing on the joy that can be found in the day and I stop being negative and complaining about everything my day really turns around! We are saved and blessed people. Make the choice to sing praises instead of adding stress to your life. My pastor said something one time that smacked me pretty hard, I love when the Holy Spirit gives him that opportunity! He said to “stop worrying and start wondering!” Can I just tell you the freedom that is in that decision?! I’m a true control freak and I have to have plans to plan. I like order in everything. With that brings worry and it used to weigh me down to the point that it was causing all kinds of problems in my life. Stress doesn’t help anything but satan in my opinion. It’s so freeing to just throw my hands up, smile at my Heavenly Father and say to him, “God I’m going to keep my ears open so I can respond in your will but I’m really wondering how you are going to fix this!?”
The Freedom to Self Love
Praise God for the release in that. I love what Phillipians 2:14-16 in the Message says about not complaining! “Do everything readily and cheerfully-no bickering, no second-guessing allowed! Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this soiled and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and the living God. Carry the light-giving Message into the night so I’ll have good cause to be proud of you on the day Christ returns. You will be living proof that I didn’t go to all this work for nothing.”
On this Valentine’s Day make the choice to love yourself! Celebrate you and who you are in Christ. Be the best you in Christ that you can be in each moment. On this day and everyday know that God loves you. Show your love for him and He gives you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4! Love the you He created!
